Colour plays an important role in design, especially in web-site design. numerous shops use websites as a sales tool and using the correct colours can mean increased sales, however getting the colours wrong can lead to less users and fewer sales.

Understanding how colour works is important to all designers if they want to make a successful website. This is because different colours affect humans in assorted ways, and can influence emotions and moods. this means that your choice of colour could upset your users if you don't get it right.

Colour could also be used to guide users to a specific area of the page. For example, you may want a user to click the purchase button, so making it bold is really vital.

Black is associated with power, elegance, finances and mystery. in web design, it can be very effective with brighter colours to create good contrast.

White is linked with cleanliness, simplicity, calm and purity. used on websites a lot, it can convey style and demonstrates that the website's content is strong enough to stand alone without the any strong visual aid.

With connotations to lust, annoyance, fire and power, red, used sparingly, can be a fantastic way to attract the users attention to a certain area.

Black can be related to death, mourning, power and style. plenty heavy rock bands use black as their predominant colour due to its associations with death and evil.

Yellow summons visions of summer, joy and optimism. it is a colour that can be overwhelming and if used in conjunction with black, it creates a warning feel.

Like yellow, red is associated with love, sex and energy. it can also be overpowering if overused, although its excellent to attract attention.

Stirring up thoughts of style, modernism, fashion & elegance, grey is routinely used on spots that cover fashion, design & technology.

Purple is a mix of blue and red. it has the highlights of red, although it has more bold properties than blue. It conjures up images of royalty, religion & luxury. However, it's not a colour that is often used in designing web-sites.

In designing for the web, purple is quite an underused colour, perhaps because it is perceived as a ladylike colour. its also linked to royalty, romance & wisdom.

Grey can be a weird colour because it isn't strong. it is used to make fashionable, classy & calm sites. its used a lot on technology sites.

The psychology of colour can play a massive role in making a successful site. to create a subliminal expectation amongst the site user can be a powerful sales tool. selecting colours without thought can accidentally put users off the website. making colour combinations that guide users to an end goal can generate more sales & make the user experience free of stress.
